THE NEW TECHNOLOGY TAKES MINORITO'S PRODUCTS TO A NEW LEVEL

Magnesium stearate is a controversial ingredient, but it is still commonly used in pharmaceutical products, food and cosmetics. Minorito has invested in new technology that enables the production of nutritional supplements without magnesium stearate.

WHAT IS MAGNESIUM STEARATE?

Magnesium stearate consists of magnesium salts of various fatty acids, mainly stearic and palmitic acids. It is a very fine and uniform white powder that feels greasy to the touch and has its own characteristic smell.

Despite its name, magnesium stearate contains only very little of the mineral magnesium, about 4-5 percent. For the most part, it consists of magnesium salts of fatty acids.

The physical properties of magnesium stearate may vary due to different manufacturing methods. It can be prepared by the reaction between magnesium chloride and sodium stearate in aqueous solutions or by the reaction of magnesium oxide, hydroxide or carbonate with stearic acid at elevated temperatures.

WHY DO MANY NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS CONTAIN MAGNESIUM STEARATE?

Magnesium stearate is usually used in the production of many nutritional supplements, pharmaceutical tablets, powders and capsules, as well as cosmetics and food products.

Magnesium stearate has many functions; it can act as an emulsifier, binder, anti-caking agent, release agent and lubricant, among other things. In medicines, vitamins and nutritional supplements, its primary purpose is to act as a lubricant.

Magnesium stearate is used in the production processes of tablets and capsules as a mass lubricant to improve flowability and prevent the mass from sticking to machines and individual ingredients from sticking to each other.

Magnesium stearate is a common ingredient in many nutritional supplements. On the product label or package, it is usually called either "magnesium stearate", "magnesium salts of fatty acids" or the combination E470b.

IS MAGNESIUM STEARATE SAFE?

Magnesium stearate has been used in the food industry for decades, but it has been the subject of much controversy, especially in the last ten years. Magnesium stearate has been claimed to suppress the function of T cells of the immune system and interfere with the absorption of the contents of tablets and capsules into the body, but there is no scientific evidence to support the claims.

Magnesium stearate is generally considered safe for humans at levels below 2.5 milligrams (mg) per kilogram per day (National Center for Biotechnology Information). It means that an 80-kilogram person can get a maximum of 200 milligrams of magnesium stearate per day.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) last assessed the safety of fatty acids as a food additive in 2018. Its decision was that as a food additive, fatty acids do not cause safety concerns in the studied usage methods and amounts. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also approved the use of magnesium stearate as an additive in food and nutritional supplements.

In excessive amounts, magnesium stearate can have laxative effects. In some people, in large amounts, it may irritate the mucous membranes of the intestine, which can cause intestinal cramps or diarrhea.

DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS WITHOUT MAGNESIUM STEARATE FROM MINORITO

Although magnesium stearate is safe in small amounts, it should be noted that it is not a natural ingredient. Minorito wants to produce top-quality nutritional supplements that are as natural as possible. We avoid the use of artificial additives.

At Minorito, we follow the latest trends in the industry and want to offer our customers new options. That is why we have invested in a new technology that enables the production of tablets without magnesium stearate. With this new technology, the tablets become high-quality and have a uniform composition. If you want to know more, please contact us.
